HISTORIC TRANSFORMATION IN GABON: "CITE DE LA DEMOCRATIE” EMERGES AS AFRICA’S NEW INTERNATIONAL GATHERING HUB
With a grand inauguration ceremony held on May 3, 2026 in Libreville, the capital of Gabon, the first phase of the "Cité de la Démocratie” complex and the Omar Bongo Ondimba Convention Center were officially opened. The ceremony brought together African heads of state, government representatives, and numerous high-level international guests.
Originally built nearly half a century ago to host the 1977 Summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of today’s African Union, the historic site has now been reborn as one of Africa’s premier destinations for diplomacy, conventions, and international events.
Revived under the vision of Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, the project is regarded as a strategic transformation initiative that will further strengthen Gabon’s international position.
The project was undertaken by SUMMA, one of the world’s leading international contracting groups listed in the ENR rankings, and was delivered in record time under a turnkey design-build model.
RECORD DELIVERY IN 14 MONTHS
Construction works initiated by SUMMA in September 2024 resulted in the completion of the project’s first phase in just 14 months.
Developed across a vast 450-hectare site, the first phase includes:
- - Main congress hall with a capacity of 3,100 people
- - Secondary conference hall for 350 people
- - Banquet hall with a capacity of 1,500 guests
- - Presidential Hall with a capacity of 275 people
- - VIP lounge areas

AFRICA’S NEW MICE DESTINATION
